Residential Appraiser

 
In order to become a state certified appraiser you must complete 200 hours of instruction. After completing the first 75 hours you can receive an Appraiser Trainee License. As a trainee, you must work under a certified appraiser for a minimum of two years and complete at least 250 appraisals.

After satisfying the trainee requirements, you must complete the remaining hours and pass the state exam to become fully certified and be able to work independently. As a fully certified appraiser you must have a 2 year associate's degree from a college or university, or 21 hours of college credit in specified subjects. Appraising classes are offered in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, as well as online. Appraisers must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Trainee License

The 60 hour Principles & Practices class is offered in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Monroe. The remaining 15 hours must be in Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. As a trainee you must work for a certified appraiser for 2 years and do a minimum of 250 appraisals to complete your apprenticeship.

Certified Residential Appraiser

To be fully certified as a residential property appraiser and work independently you must complete an additional 125 hour for a total of 200 hours. To be a certified appraiser you must have a 2 year associate's degree or 21 hours of college credit which must be in approved courses.
